A venerated alpine essential, the Patagonia Women's R1 Hoody remains the optimal hooded midlayer for the full spectrum of mountain endeavors—now made with lighter and more breathable Polartec Power Grid fabric (with Polygiene permanent odor control) for outstanding stretch, compressibility and durability.
More than a decade of ascents and counting, and Patagonia's R1 Hoody keeps racking ‘em up. Its highly refined high/low interior grid fabric (Polartec Power Grid™)—the lightest and most breathable version yet, and still exclusive to Patagonia—warms, stretches and compresses incredibly well, while offering durability and a terrific feel. The feminine silhouette and design include the pared-down detailing that backcountry pursuits demand: a deeper front zipper with a comfy zipper garage that’s easy on your chin; discreet, on-seam wrist-warming thumb holes; and a snug-fitting balaclava-style hood. Other features include raglan sleeves for pack-wearing comfort, a high exterior chest pocket, Variable Conditions Cuffs with spiral-stitch construction that let you push up your sleeves without constricting your forearms, a long torso for layering under a harness and Polygiene permanent odor control.

Outdoor Gear Lab's "Top Pick" for Fleece for Women
"The Patagonia R1 Hoody is a high-performing technical layer without many bells or whistles. This lightweight pullover is perfect for rock climbing missions, backcountry skiing and cardio-heavy hikes. It breathes beautifully but still provides a good amount of warmth for its weight and thin-ness For this we've given it our Top Pick for Breathability award. Our favorite features on this jacket are the 3/4 length zipper and the fitted hood and built-in balaclava. When you are working up a sweat you can unzip it almost all the way for extra venting, and when you need just a little extra warmth, you can pull the hood into place and zip it up all the way to the tip of your nose. Sure, you might look a bit like a ninja (especially if you opt for black), but this feature is beyond awesome when you really need it. And if you don't want the hood up, it's thin and low profile enough to not interfere with a helmet or other layer. It comes with thumb loops and a single chest pocket and not much else, but when moving fast in cold weather, less is often more...everyone who is active in cold weather should have at least one of these R1 beauties in their closet.."

bluesign® Approved Fabric
Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.
In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.
Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.
Polygiene® odor control permanently protects your garments from smelling like a locker room. Sweat itself is odorless, but it creates the conditions that bacteria need to multiply, and some of those bacteria produce odors. Polygiene permanent odor control stops the growth of odor-causing bacteria on fabrics, so you can wear more and wash less.
Active only on the fabric surface, Polygiene permanent odor control does not interfere with perspiration or with the skin’s natural bacterial flora. Polygiene particles are more than 100 times larger than nanoparticles and therefore are too large to penetrate to the skin’s barrier.
In 1993, Patagonia adopted fleece into their product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. They were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.
Today, Patagonia are able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. They now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including their own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.
Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.
